HOUR: All Hours are represented on a 24-hour scale and are reported as Central Standard Time (CST).

QUERIES: Each search performed is counted once in the QUERIES column.
For example, if a user submits a search term such as "solar system" or "Plato," a list of results will be returned. This page counts as one Query in the Statistics Report. There are several types of Queries, including encyclopedia results, magazine results, dictionary results, etc.

DOCUMENTS: Each article accessed is counted in the DOCUMENTS column.
For example, after completing a Query, a user may select an article from the returned list. This counts as one Document in the Statistics Report. As the user continues to page through the article or navigate to other articles, each selection is counted as one Document in the Statistics Report. There are several types of Documents, including encyclopedia articles, year in review articles, magazine articles, source documents, etc.

OTHER: Each page that is not a document or a query is counted in the OTHER column.
For example, the Home Page, the Help pages, A-Z Browse pages, Subject Browse pages, etc. are counted in the OTHER column.

HITS: Ancillary files that do not constitute pages are counted in the HITS column.
For example, image files (e.g., JPEG and GIF files), Macromedia Flash elements, and other Web page components are counted as one Hit in the Statistics Report.

TOTAL: Totals are given for the sums of statistics across a given row or column.

SESSIONS: EB statistics show that the average number of page views during a given session is 5. We determine the total number of sessions by dividing the total page views by 5.

TOTAL (COLUMN): When viewing a report the sum of all the usage for a given time period for an institution is represented in a column on the right entitled TOTAL. Please note that this column does not include the session counts in the total.

GRAND TOTAL: When viewing a report for "All Accounts," the sum of all the URLs accessed in a given column for all institutions displayed is represented in a row entitled GRAND TOTAL.

World Data Analyst Report Definitions

HOUR: All Hours are represented on a 24-hour scale and are reported as Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). (Click here for an explanation of GMT.)

QUERIES: Each table or chart that is created by a user is counted once in the QUERIES column. (For example, if a user creates a table comparing the number of cellular phone subscriptions in Andorra and Bolivia, this counts as one Query in the Statistics Report.)

DOCUMENTS: Articles, PDF files, and exported or e-mailed tables and charts, are counted in the DOCUMENTS column. (For example, if after creating a table, a user clicks the link to view an article about a country, that is counted as one DOCUMENT. If the user chooses the "E-mail this page" or "Export the numeric data to a spreadsheet" link from the table or chart, that is also counted as one DOCUMENT. If the user opens one of the "Country Snapshots" PDF documents, that counts in the DOCUMENTS column, as well.)

OTHER: Views of the Home Page, Help pages, etc., are all counted in the OTHER column.

HITS: Images loaded (e.g., .jpg and .gif files), as well as other ancillary files, are counted in the HITS column.

TOTAL: Totals are given for the sums of statistics across a given row or column.

GRAND TOTAL: When viewing a report for "All Accounts," the sum of all the URLs accessed in a given column for all institutions displayed is represented in a row entitled GRAND TOTAL.

• Additional Usage Statistics Notes:
  Although the result lists of Internet site searches are recorded in Queries, usage of related Internet links is not counted in the usage figures, since those sites are not located on the Britannica server. (A "Related Internet Link" is a link to another Web site relevant to a Britannica article.)
